Sorry if this is not posted properly as I am new to the site.Tried to start my car tonight as put key in ignition all the dash lights starting going off randomly, then when turned ignition on,click as key turned but engine dead as a dodo.It made no attempt to start whatsoever.Presumed it was battery as has been bit harder to start last few days.Checked battery with battery charger and it was picking up 9v.

This typically happened when my husband is away as he is in the army.we live rurally and i really need my car!So have been doing a bit of reading on here-is it likely to be battery, starter motor, glowplug or a faulty relay 30 or 109 or none of these????.Can't afford to put it in garage as just forked out for 10 driving lessons for 17yr old stepson and paid off stepdaughters debts due to her being laid off from her job.So basically need ideas of what it could be and any recommendations for some-one local who would have a look without charging much.I live between Sleaford and Lincoln.Any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation. This looks like a fantastic site.

Looks like battery. A battery should have 12 - 12.5V from it with engine off. Alternator should supply about 14.5 V at 1500 rpm engine running. Most car parts factors or autoelectricians will check it for you for free. Question is, how will you start it to get there? Have you a friend with jump leads? Edited by edatelder

I would agree, classic battery symptoms - they tend to last between 3 and 5 years which would put yours right in the middle of that!

9V will certainly not start a car, get it jumped and then test the voltage which will hopefully be a little over 14V

Is it a sealed, maintenance free battery? Or one with caps on the cells? If it has caps, take them off and top up the cells with distilled water to just above the lead plates and recharge the battery if you can.

Thank you both for your replys it is much appreciated,my friends husband had a look last night but it was quite dark even with torch he couldn't really see the battery properly and he was reluctant to do anything. He thought because i had lights etc and had some charge it was possibly something else.Have gone out to car myself this am,and no power whatsover so thank you think this confirms what you have said. Will now go find friends husband again to hopefully jump start me.I guess this means a new battery, have you any recommendations where and what to buy as would love to sort it before my husband returns home. Really appreciate you both taking the time to reply. :D

Thanks again Margaret

Hi Maggie,

There's been a lot of Diesel vehicles battery dying with the cold winter weather we have had.

If you went to somewhere like Halfords they would charge you from

well friend tried to jumpstart the car got enough charge that dash lights etc started working but nothing from the engine it was making no attempt to turn over.he suggested we left battery on charge overnight (battery charger read 11 but then started to decrease).he hadn't done this before with battery still in car but removed the two nuts on the top front of battery and disconnected them from the battery-was this correct? What would you recommend as our next step??

hope you have the key number to get your radio working again after you re-conect the battery. i conect the positive to the terminal and the negative to the body as per the instructions i had with my charger.

When you tried to "jumpstart" the car, where you pushing it up and down the road, or using two thick copper cables with big crocodile clips on each end - one red, one black? That should have worked, pushing probably won't. If you charge it for twelve hours, then reconnect the battery, it should start in the morning to go to Halfords. Let us know.

hello again,we used the jump leads today.Last night lights etc did work, this am nothing including central locking. After using jump leads did have lights on dash come on,we tried waiting as usual until glow plug light went out then turning on ignition -just heard a click then nothing, tried again with accelator nothing.now have left it charging overnight.don't hold much hope.Thinking now it is something more than the battery :( .Well will see in am everything crossed. Thanks again for your reply.Wish i'd had one of you clever sorts here tonight ;) lol.

Have you actually replaced the Battery yet ?

Your old battery appears to be knackered ( technical term ) and as such will you will not be able to recharge it as it will not hold a charge ( assuming it is knackered ).

Jump starting may also not work in this case as the old faulty battery will draw all the power from the other cars battery and there will not be enough left to turn your starter motor.

If you bump start the car ( if you have a convenient hill, or a couple of fit young blokes ) you will most likely find it starts up straight away......however if you turn the engine off it will still not start as your battery is knackered.

Go get a new battery....BUT BEWARE....the one you mentioned previously is for the petrol engined Galaxy's......you need the diesel one....HSB096....browse Halfords website again.

Change the battery - failing that, then change the car. ;)

Why do so many people make simple things difficult? :(

Can you "bump start" a diesel? With so much compression I thought it was too hard. Also if there no juice in the battery the fuel solenoid won't open. I know someone who knackered their gearbox trying to bump start a diesel Espace.

Yes you can, although many cars nowadays will need the key in the 'crank' position in order to do it. Have bumbed a Galaxy TDI on a grass fieldafter the interior lights drained the battery on a camping holiday.

To the original posters question regarding non starting/duff battery - Please check that the auxiliary fusebox hasn't fried, and that the loom connections are good and not blackened. I have had to do this to both galaxies I have owned, and my current car was just 3 and a half years old when I had to do it last year. It is (far too)common problem on Galaxies

Thanks everyone the overnight charge worked and drove to Halfords where they tested the battery and found it had 45% capacity.Apparently they don't change Galaxy batteries as harder to get them out,so took the new battery next door to National and they did it for

WILL YOU READ THE REPLIES PEOPLE HAVE POSTED TO YOUR QUERIES? :D

Halfords have sold you a battery for a petrol galaxy. HSB075 is a 61AH battery - hopelessly inadequate for a 1.9Tdi. It will probably pack in, in next to no time.

Go back and complain - you need a HSB019 or a HB019 as Big Kev stated.

When I type my Mk 2 diesel reg into Halfrauds website I get offered the HSB096 (70Ah, 640 Amp starting current) at Edited by edatelder

is that the little red light on the drivers door?

how fast is it flashing?

if its only flashing every few seconds then thats the pats/alarm system working as it should,

do a search on pats and all will be reviled.
